Adi Kailash is a virgin mountain in Tibet Region of China. It is situated in the Kailash Range in the western part of the Tibetan Plateau, Transhimalaya. Mount Kailash is located at an elevation of 6,638 m, between China, India and Nepal.

Manasarovar Lake and Rakshastal lake are closest to Mt. Kailash. The four holy rivers: Indus, Sutlej, Brahmaputra, and Karnali is the source of the Kailash Region Snow and lakes. Mansarovar is popular location for Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Bon religion. Devotees from India, China, Nepal and other countries in the region undertake a pilgrimage to the mountain. Trek to Kailash generally involves trekking towards Lake Mansarovar and a circumambulation of Kailash Mountain.

While in 1926,1936,1980s Chinese government gave the opportunity to climb the mountain. But none of them got Success. Literally Chinese authorities promised that any climbing activities on Mount Kailash were strictly prohibited. As of 2023, there has been no recorded successful ascent of the mountain. The climbing of the mountain is prohibited by the Chinese government due to its religious significance.
According to Hinduism, the mountain is said to be as the home of Shiva, who lives there along with his wife goddess Parvati and their children, Ganesha and Kartikeya. Hindus believe Kailash to be the Mount Meru, which is a stairway to heaven.

On the other hand, it is believed by Jains that after Rishabhanatha reach nirvana, his son Bharata had constructed three stupas and twenty-four shrines of the 24 tirthankaras in the region with their idols with precious stones and named it Sinhnishdha and also attained moksha from Kailash.

As per Buddhist texts, Mount Kailash (Kailasa) is known as the fabled Mount Meru. Adi Kailash is central of the universe as a whole. In Buddhism, Gang Rinpoche represents the father of the world and lake while Mansarovar symbolizes the mother.

Every Saga Dawa (the fourth month of the Tibetan calendar), the pole is lowered and then re-erected. This event attracts pilgrims from all over Tibet. Yama Dwar, which means “The Gate of the Lord of Death,” is located near Tarboche.
